Researchers: Computers May One Day Perceive Reality Just Like Humans

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (CBSDC) – Researchers at the University of Maryland are developing computer systems that will be able to see, hear and think like humans.

The school’s Center for Automation Research (CfAR) hopes that improving a computer’s perception will make our lives better, healthier and easier.

But it’s more than just seeing or hearing; by studying how the human brain processes information, the scientists are working on ways to help computers recognize faces and voices in the same way we do.

One practical effect may be to help people with vision or hearing loss to regain those lost senses.

In a video released by CfAR, the researchers detail how the technology can be applied to many different fields.

Facial recognition technology can make easier for surveillance cameras to identify individuals in crowds, even under less than ideal conditions.

By applying these applications to robots, machines may be able to help around the house and make like easier for people with disabilities.

One robot is shown in the video attempting to make a salad, though it’s clear that technology is far from perfect.

The video notes that human beings have had millions of years to perfect our sensory perceptions, while CfAR has been at it for just 50 years.
